To talk on any site one needs at least I.E.4, or Netscape 4.08, or AOL 4, or better, a working microphone or headset, and a very small browser "plugin" which should load automatically once when you first access the page. The different systems used appear to be: Yahoo Chat, Excite(using LipStream), LipStream alone, Vocaltec Surf'n'Call, TelcoPoint using HearMe, plain "old" HearMe VoiceCreator, and "new" blue HearMe. (Some of these have since ceased - refer FAQ).

(less...) Access Providers Resources about and for Internet Service Providers (ISPs)... companies which provide access to the Internet, via dialup connections, leased lines, etc. NOTE that entries for actual ISPs should be
added under the REGIONAL category for the parts of the world they serve (for instance, National ISPs in the U.S.A. would go under Regional/USA). Sites that do not offer Internet access, such as companies that specialize in web hosting and domain name registration, don't belong under here since they have their own Open Directory category elsewhere. If you find another good worldwide list of ISPs, you can add that under Regional. ISP lists that only deal with some portion of the world should be added under the category for the parts of the world they cover. You may want to add "[ISPLIST]" to the beginning of the title of the site, to set it apart from the normal listings.

Domain Names Domain_Names guides users to subcategories which contain all resources and services having to do with Domain Name Services. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed database used by computer
systems to map between hostnames and IP addresses, and to provide electronic mail routing information. Each site (university department, campus, company, or department within a company, for example) maintains its own database of information and runs a server program that other systems across the Internet can query. The DNS provides the protocol which allows clients and servers to communicate with each other. This category and its sub-categories include the companies that provide the resources to make this system work, companies that provide the resources to end users for use or resell and sites that discuss issues in the system.

(less...) Gopher From The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing (05 Sep 00): A popular distributed document retrieval system which started as a Campus Wide Information System at the University of Minnesota. Many
hosts on the Internet now run Gopher servers which provide a menu of documents. A document may be a plain text file, sound, image, submenu or other Gopher object type. It may be stored on another host or may provide the ability to search through certain files for a given string. From Jargon File (4.2.0, 31 Jan 2000): gopher n. A type of Internet service first floated around 1991 and obsolesced around 1995 by the World Wide Web. Gopher presents a menuing interface to a tree or graph of links; the links can be to documents, runnable programs, or other gopher menus arbitrarily far across the net. Some claim that the gopher software, which was originally developed at the University of Minnesota, was named after the Minnesota Gophers (a sports team). Others claim the word derives from American slang `gofer' (from "go for", dialectal "go fer"), one whose job is to run and fetch things. Finally, observe that gophers dig long tunnels, and the idea of tunneling through the net to find information was a defining metaphor for the developers. Probably all three things were true, but with the first two coming first and the gopher-tunnel metaphor serendipitously adding flavor and impetus to the project as it developed out of its concept stage.
(less...) History Accounts of the origins and development of the Internet. Archived material from the Internet's past.
Internet FaxNews and Media The News/Internet branch of the Open Directory contains sites publishing news about the Internet or Internet related issues. These sites may publish using the traditional web page, or may be published
as newsletters. This category is not for the "News" or "What's New" pages of non-news web sites. Those sites should be listed under their appropriate category. For example, the "News" page of the Department of Education should be listed wherever the Department of Education main page appears. Please add only one URL for a news site. Do not add a URL for each issue of a news site or newsletter. The editor of this branch will include all relevant information about all pages of your site in the site review. If you feel the review of your site is incomplete, please direct your comments to the editor listed at the bottom of the branch page. Sites which do not fit this description will be relocated to an appropriate category.

and add to the contents. While this category is not the place, if you are interested in the history of the WWW one place to start might be: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/History/Lists_Of_Sources/ This category contains links to other categories only. Please do not submit here. If you do it will lengthen the time it takes for your site to be accepted because we must then try to decide where your site best fits. What we decide is not necessarily what you would decide. Please help us both and find the best fit for your site. Submission Guidelines - The Open Directory Project editors are committed to building the most useful Directory on the Internet. We want to help your promotion efforts by listing your site in a timely manner. We want your website to be found easily. Message boards about web design are located in Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Chats_and_Forums/.
(less...) Free Web Space Free web hosting has become an important element in the growth of the Internet over the past several years. The number of firms in this market has expanded rapidly and continues to grow, as have the
range and sophistication of the services they provide. The Open Directory seeks to identify and provide accurate and informative links to as many of these hosts as possible. However, all firms that provide 'free hosting' do not qualify for listings in Hosting/Free and its sub-categories. For our purposes, 'free web hosting' consists of providing space for English-language hypertext and related documents on computers that can be accessed via the Internet to individuals or organizations at no out-of-pocket expense and without requiring the purchase of any other product or service as a pre-condition. Internet Service Providers (ISPs), which provide web-space to their subscribers as part of an overall service, are listed in the Regional/ hierachary. Hosts that provide service in languages other than English are listed under World/. Hosts that provide only minimal 'free hosting' as an inducement to purchase their fee-based services will not usually be listed here, although they may qualify for inclusion in other hosting categories: Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosting Business/E-Commerce/Services/Hosting Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development Submissions from 'co-branded' or 'private-label' hosts will only be accepted if they provide substantial original content. Submissions from 'affiliate' or 'referal' agents and those with redirected URLs will not be knowingly accepted and will be deleted when identified. The following template is used to describe sites listed here: Target audience Used only when needed to clairy to whom a listing is aimed or particularly appeals; for example, to distinguish between particular interests in the Arts_and_Humanities, Culture_and_Heritage, Cars,_Trucks_and_Cycles, Special_Interest and similar sub-categories. Available web-space Stated in megabytes (Mb), and followed by any known relevant information such as bandwidth limits, type of Internet connection, or access to secure servers. Advertising The type and frequency of required or 'forced' advertising; and, if known, whether advertising placed by the user (site-owner) is permitted. Some hosts will share the revenue produced by forced advertising with the site-owner and this is indicated when possible. Uploads The method by which site files are transmitted to the host for publication on the Internet. Most typically, this is done using the user's web browser addressed to a 'file-manager' program on the host's site. Less frequently, files are transmitted using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program, which is more flexible but somewhat more difficult to use. Some hosts make both methods available and a few require that files be transfered via e-mail. Features The availability of e-mail accounts, graphic libraries and similar features are indicated here. CGI and scripting The extent to which CGI (Common Gate Interface) scripts and related factors such as Microsoft FrontPage extensions, SQL (Structured Query Language) and database access are supported are indicated here. Sample URL A sample URL (Universal Resource Locator) is usually provided to give some idea how the hosted site's web address will appear in printed materials.
