GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages is a free static website hosting service provided by GitHub that allows users to publish websites directly from their GitHub repositories. Sites are hosted on the github.io domain, with URLs following the pattern username.github.io.
Key Features
- Automatic publishing - Push to your repository and changes go live immediately
- Jekyll integration - Built-in support for the Jekyll static site generator, enabling blogs and dynamic content with Markdown
- Custom domains - Option to use your own domain name via CNAME configuration
- HTTPS included - Free SSL certificates for all github.io sites
- Project sites - Each repository can have its own documentation site in addition to your main user/org site
History
GitHub Pages was launched in December 2008 by GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner. It was designed to make publishing web content "as easy as pushing to your GitHub repository." The service has since become one of the most popular platforms for hosting documentation, portfolios, blogs, and project landing pages for the open-source community.
